FAMILY

What is a family?

What makes a family?

  • The church regards the family as a natural society, an institution of nature, in the sense that some form of community between parents and children is required by human nature and consequently arises spontaneously wherever men exist. As a primary unit of society, family holds a place of crucial significance in the development and destiny of man for it socializes him as a child and determines the basic framework of relationships within which he fulfills himself as an adult.
  • The family is the foundational institution of society ordained by God. It is constituted by marriage and is composed of persons related to one another by marriage, blood or adoption.
  • The family is a fundamental institution of human society.
  • A family has different meanings one of the being a unit of related items.
  • In the concept of human life a family is a union of parents living with their children .
  • Though challenges here and there may take out an item in the family.
  • As far as a family consists of father, mother and their children, then we can speak of two components of family.

  • The Two Components of a Family are;

  1. The Horizontal Component

The Horizontal Component of a family is that which is formed between wife and husband. It is in this component where by the couple is bound together by the so called conjugal love. Following this, then this component is also called Conjugal society.

  1. Vertical Component

The vertical component of a family is the union between parents and their children. The spouses in the conjugal society are worthy of the name parents after they have had the first child. This is also known as parental society.

  • These two components are not distinct societies but they are two aspects of the very same family. Accidentally, a family may have only one component, for instance when the spouses have got no children, they remain in a horizontal component.

  • A family may be related by blood or adapting.
  • A family is a (close-knit) group of people related by blood, marriage, law, or custom, especially if they live or work together.

Characteristics of a successful family.

The purpose of human life is dictated by natural law; hence the means to achieve that purpose are also dictated by natural laws. This human life is both material and spiritual; therefore, human development is full when spiritual and material development is also full. A family as an institution of natural law provides three conditions for the full development.

  1. Stability

This refers to the presence of both parents in a family. Parents must be known even though they may die. The formation of strong personality depends on this presence of parents. Anonymous parents, especially those due to extramarital relations may lead into deterioration rather than improvement of a family.

  1. Authority

In a family, parents have to establish a framework of laws and order in the household. This will enable the family to train children how to live in society.

  1. Love

Nothing strengthens characters more than love. Love implies a mutual sacrifice in a family; each member of a family is concerned with another member. Children will learn to love others by observing the lives of parents, brothers and sisters.

  1. Avoiding making decisions out of anger.
  2. Loyalty, devotion and openness.
  3. Communication and understanding.
  4. Compassion and care.
  5. Forgiveness and respect.
  6. Responsible parenthood.
  7. Faithfulness & understanding
  8. Peaceful coexistence

12.Commitment and responsibility.

Importance of a successful family

  • Making decision is easy .
  • Successful family plant the seeds of love, compassion
  • It can help kids feel loved and secure which is essential for their sound emotional and intellectual development.
  • It can contribute to resolving many of childrens’ behavioural and psychological issues related to their learning, eating and sleeping.
  • Since family is the basic cell of the society, a successful family contribute to successful society at large…a nation, a continent n indeed the world.
  • Enhances good morals among the family members
  • Can teach family members to respect each other’s difference of opinion while boosting individual thinking and personal self-worth.
  • It can promote social skills in children which can help them create healthy relations of their own.
  • Parents can become apt role models for their kids and lay the foundation of a strong value system.
  • It can encourage kids to develop a high moral character by establishing their wisdom of right and wrong.
  • A caring family structure can enhance a sense of responsibility in kids by teaching them the value of fulfilling their duties and obligations and upholding commitments.

PROFAMILY (protect family)

Being profamily is like being prolife.

The profamily person takes a conscious decision to respect, protect and promote the family.

The profamily person today stands in the gap to caution, exhort, advocate and lobby for family friendly policies.

For example we have the constitution  which provide that the family is the basic unit of society and shall enjoy protection from the state.Yet the only thing the state does is issue marriage certificates and probably people return to the state for divorce or separation proceedings.

Many young people today don’t want to start families because starting a family is an uphill task.

The profamily person would be at the Front line of this kind of advocacy.

The profamily person is also interested in protection of parental rights over the education of their children in values and faith since there is a global drive to separate children from parents in matters values and norms.

Prolifers are always profamily and profamily people are always Prolifers… The separation of the two in the past was a problem. But for sure it would be pedagogicaly appropriate for one to be schooled in the Prolife issues then graduate to the profamily issues.

Why we need to protect a family.

  • Because it is the cell of the Society.
  • It is a domestic church.
  • It is the first place we get spiritual nourishment.
  • It is the school of morals and values for the generations.
  • We should protect a family so that it can survive and grow.
  • Being the basic unit of the society we need to protect the family so as to preserve the entire society at large.
  • Because it’s where lives and cultures are nurtured and developed. You play around with a family, you mess with the society.
  • To live in peace and happiness.
