On 19th July 2026.Members of St. Augustine Small Christian Community had a chance to visit our brothers in Christ at Kamiti Maximum Prison for a day of prayer, fellowship and encouragement. We started by celebrating Holy Mass together, then had a wonderful interaction session with members of the Kamiti Catholic community. It was a very humbling and eye-opening experience. We got to hear some of the inmates’ personal stories, some of which admitted guilt and others maintained their innocence. We also learned about their experiences and challenges during their incarceration.
More importantly, we came not just to give, but to listen, learn and to remind them that they are not forgotten. We passed messages of hope and encouragement, two of our members reflecting messages that resonated with life in prison. Dr. Catherine Bosibori asked us to think about the various kinds of prisons that we live in, and how we can be prisoners of our own minds. She encouraged all of us to start our journey towards freedom by working towards inner freedom and learning to forgive ourselves, guilty or innocent.
Psychologist Stephen Muchiri was inspired by the David and Goliath story. He reminded us that prior to challenging Goliath, David spent many years in the wilderness tending to sheep, and even fended off wild animals for his flock. Those hard times were preparing him for the challenge to come. David was not just a guy who picked up the sling and got lucky, he was ready. Stephen reminded the prisoners that their suffering was not the end of their story but a time of preparation.
We were equally inspired by the Catholic community at Kamiti, whose members remain lively, hopeful, prayerful, and committed to their faith. Their choir was particularly lively and a reminder that hope and joy can still grow in tough times. All of this left us with a basic, yet meaningful reminder: Everyone has a story; everyone deserves hope; and no one should be forgotten.
We invite all of us to pray for our brothers at Kamiti, to support them and to find opportunities to visit and walk with them. Jesus tells us: “I was in prison and you came to visit me.” Matthew 25:36
