Christ the Teacher Catholic Chaplaincy celebrated a special Thanksgiving Mass in honour of Fr. Victor Mutobera and Fr. Cosmas Onyango, both alumni of the Kenyatta University Catholic Community (KUCC). The celebration was an opportunity for the community to give thanks for their priestly vocations, ministry, and the lasting impact they have had on the Church and the KUCC family.
The Gospel, proclaimed by Fr. Patrick Okok, was taken from Matthew 14:22–33, recounting Jesus walking on the sea and His encounter with the disciples amid the storm. When the disciples were overcome by fear, Jesus reassured them with the words, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”
Peter stepped out of the boat in faith and began walking towards Jesus, but when he became distracted by the strong winds, he grew afraid and began to sink. Crying out, “Lord, save me!”, he immediately received Christ’s helping hand.
In his homily, Fr. Cosmas Onyango reflected on the importance of trusting God even when we find ourselves facing storms and uncertainties in life. The Gospel reminds us that faith does not mean the absence of difficulties; rather, it means trusting that Christ is present with us even in the midst of the storm.
The celebration was therefore not only a thanksgiving for the lives and ministry of Fr. Victor and Fr. Cosmas, but also an invitation to the KUCC community to remain courageous in faith. Like Peter, we may sometimes become overwhelmed by the challenges around us, but Christ continues to stretch out His hand and call us back to trust in Him.
As we celebrated the journey of these two KUCC alumni, we gave thanks for their vocation and prayed that God may continue to guide and strengthen them in their priestly ministry.
