On Saturday 25th July 2026, members of St. Augustine Small Christian Community had the opportunity to spend a special day with our former Christ the Teacher Catholic Chaplaincy chaplain, Fr. Lance Nadeau of the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, at the Maryknoll House in Manyani, Nairobi.
It was a gathering that brought together St. Augustine SCC members, Fr. Lance and fellow Maryknoll priests, including Fr. Patrick, Fr. Joshua, Fr. John and Fr. Mutobera, together with friends and several people whose lives have been touched by Fr. Lance over the years. We began with Holy Mass, where Fr. Lance reminded us of something that remains very important for our country: the need to look beyond our tribal differences and remember that, before anything else, we are one people and one nation. His message was simple but timely, especially at a time when it is easy to allow our differences to divide us.
After Mass came the part that made the day particularly special. Some of those who had known and interacted with Fr. Lance shared their personal stories. They spoke about the different ways he had supported them, guided them, opened doors for them and simply been there when they needed someone. There were tears, plenty of laughter and many moments that reminded us just how much one person can influence the lives of others. A common thread ran through almost every testimony: Fr. Lance’s generosity. Many spoke about how his kindness and willingness to help had changed their lives in one way or another. For some, it was something he did years ago that they still remember to this day.
We also took the opportunity to appreciate him with a few gifts that represented the love and affection we have for him. Among them were African attire and accessories, an African walking stick and a Kenyan shield, a small symbol of the connection he has built with Kenya and the people he has served. Of course, the day would not have been complete without good food, laughter and plenty of catching up. We shared a hearty meal and enjoyed the simple joy of being together.

As we left, one thing stood out. Life is really about the people we meet along the way. At different points in our lives, someone holds our hand, gives us a chance, offers encouragement or simply believes in us when we need it most. Sometimes we move on and forget to look back and say thank you. Our visit to Fr. Lance was a reminder to do exactly that; to remember the people who have helped us along the way, to appreciate them while we can, and to do the same for others. It was a beautiful day of faith, friendship, gratitude and family. And perhaps most importantly, it reminded us to keep the fire of community alive and to continue holding each other’s hands through the journey of life.
We are grateful to Fr. Lance for the lives he has touched and for the memories and friendships he has left with us. We pray that God continues to bless him and the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers in their ministry.
