This Sunday’s Gospel (Matthew 10:37–42) presents a profound invitation from Jesus to embrace the true cost of discipleship. He reminds His apostles that following Him requires placing God above every earthly attachment, willingly carrying one’s cross, and living a life of selfless love and service.
Jesus teaches that whoever seeks only personal comfort and security will ultimately lose true life, while those who surrender their lives for His sake will discover lasting joy and eternal life. He also emphasizes that every act of kindness shown in His name, no matter how small, has great value in the eyes of God. Even offering a cup of cold water to someone in need becomes an expression of Christ’s love and will never go unrewarded.
In his homily, Fr. Boniface Kariuki reflected on the call to authentic Christian discipleship. He encouraged the faithful to examine their priorities and ask whether Christ truly occupies the first place in their lives. Following Jesus is not always easy; it demands sacrifice, perseverance, and the courage to remain faithful even when faced with challenges. Yet, through the cross, we encounter the fullness of God’s love and the promise of eternal life.
Fr. Boniface also reminded the congregation that discipleship is lived not only through grand gestures but also through simple acts of love, hospitality, generosity, and service. Every opportunity to welcome, encourage, and care for another person is an opportunity to welcome Christ Himself.
As members of Christ the Teacher Catholic Chaplaincy, let us renew our commitment to follow Christ wholeheartedly, carry our daily crosses with faith, and become living witnesses of His love through our words and actions. May we always choose Christ above all else and joyfully serve those He places in our path.
